Competitive Socialising: From a Booming Trend to a Maturing Market

Insights

A recent feature by MCA Insight examined the rapid growth of the competitive socialising sector and the pressures now shaping its next phase, featuring our input as venue operators in the space.

According to research from Savills, the UK market now exceeds 800 sites, up 58% since 2018. Multi-site operators account for more than 500 venues, representing 84% growth over the same period. The sector is forecast to reach 1,100 sites by 2030, with larger brands expected to dominate market share.

Consumer demand remains strong. Data from KAM Media shows that 29% of UK adults visited a competitive socialising venue in the past 12 months, with repeat visits increasing year on year. The category continues to resonate with consumers looking for shared, experience-led occasions.

At the same time, MCA highlights signs of consolidation. Operators including Gravity, Sixes and XP Factory have announced restructures or slower expansion plans amid softer consumer sentiment and rising competition. The NIQ RSM Hospitality Tracker shows that while total sales remain positive, like-for-like performance across the segment has been uneven, reflecting increased supply in the market.

For Oche, the UK remains a priority market. Ann-Kristin Jermstad, Oche Global Operations Director, notes that while trading conditions are challenging, the long-term fundamentals are compelling.

She told MCA: ‘“We see the UK as quite an important market. The appetite for competitive socialising in the UK is strong. It’s a huge country with lots of opportunities.”

The focus is on disciplined expansion, strong franchise partnerships and delivering a premium experience that combines technology-led darts with high quality food and drink.

The article underlines a clear shift in the sector. Competitive socialising continues to grow, but success will depend on operational strength, brand clarity and the ability to drive repeat visits. As the market matures, scale and execution will define the next wave of winners.
